1976-77 GRAND MASTER OF GLOC

Joseph H. Moore

Grand Master M.W. Brother Joseph H. Moore III (1976-1977)

M.W. Joseph H. Moore. III was born in Richmond, Virginia, USA on November 29, 1919. He spent his younger days in the small town of Ashland, Virginia, where he attended the public schools, graduating from high school at the head of his class in 1936.With the help of scholarships and part-time work, he went on to the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and graduated in 1940 with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.

His first professional work was with the US Rural Electrification Administration in Washington, D.C. and later in St. Louis, Missouri. In December 1942 Bro. Joe joined the US Armed Forces as a Signal Radar Officer and served until May 1946, being stationed in several locations in the US as well as overseas for 28 months in Australia, New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan. It was during those years overseas that he first realized the importance of the Asian nations bordering the Pacific Ocean.

After the end of World War II, Bro. Joe returned to his old job in Washington, D.C. Soon, however, he felt a longing to return to Asia. With his bride, Mille Remund, he went to Korea in October 1947 with the US Military Government and later the US Aid Program. During the Korean war he was injured while evacuating a power station in the face of the enemy advance, in an action for which he was awarded the US Medal of Freedom. After seven months in hospitals from Seoul, Korea to Bethesda, Maryland, he was able to resume work with the US Aid Program in Washington, D.C. in August 1951.

Once again the call of the Orient was too strong to resist and in July 1953 Bro. Joe joined the Taipei Office of the J.G. White Engineering Corp., first in power system planning and later as project manager. After completion of the White contract he be-came a consultant to the Republic of China on power, energy and industrial development, a position which he still holds.

Bro. Joe knocked on the door of Liberty Lodge No.7 on February 11, 1955, was raised on May 13, 1955 and served as Master of the Lodge in 1965-66. He is a 33° Mason in the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Southern Jurisdiction, USA and has served as Master of two of the Taipei Bodies. He crossed the hot sands to Afifi Temple in October 1957 and is a Director of the Ali Shan Oasis Shrine Club. As a long-time Taipei resident, Bro. Joe has been active in community affairs. He was a member of the Taipei American School board for 16 years, including three terms as chairman. In the HSA Protestant Chapel he sings in the choir, teaches Sunday school and is President of the Chapel Council. He is a member of the American Chamber of Commerce in the Re-public of China, a Standing Supervisor of the American University Club and Chairman of the TIWC Educational Foundation. Bro. Joe has a wonderful Mother back in Richmond who celebrated her 96th birthday during his reign as Grand Master. He and Mille also have two sons and two daughters, three of whom are in the US working or studying; their younger daughter, following her graduation from college, returned to Taiwan for Chinese studies.
